As an athlete and someone who has trained consistently since childhood, my body has always been a source of strength, control, and pride. So when I suffered a sports hernia that led to a femoral nerve impingement, everything changed.
I still remember the pain vividly—sharp nerve pain radiating around my hip, through my quad and inner thigh, and shooting down to my ankle. Walking, something so basic and fundamental, became unbearable. And this wasn’t coming from someone new to discomfort. I can tolerate pain. But this was different. This was debilitating.
When Movement Isn’t an Option
The injury left my hip unstable and my core weak. The femoral nerve impingement made every step uncomfortable. Not only was the physical pain challenging, but the mental toll was equally intense. For someone who is used to working out 5–6 days a week, the sudden halt was disorienting. My body didn’t feel like mine anymore, and the fear of losing all the strength I’d built over the years crept in fast.
Like many, I turned to a team of professionals—physical therapists, massage therapists, acupuncturists. The appointments piled up, while the workouts disappeared. Still, I showed up every single day for my rehab exercises. I was relentless with my routine. And honestly, I believe that mindset made all the difference.
The Turning Point: Discovering EMS Training
After about five months, my doctor finally cleared me to begin light exercise—but under strict limitations. No heavy lifting. Nothing strenuous. For someone who lives and breathes intensity, this was a frustratingly slow green light. But I didn’t want to push myself too soon, a mistake I’ve made countless times in the past.
That’s when I turned to EMS training, a tool that ended up completely changing my recovery. At the time, I didn’t realize how pivotal this would be in my recovery journey. Looking back, this was the moment my EMS injury recovery really began.
EMS allowed me to activate deep muscle groups without picking up a single weight. I could stimulate my core, glutes, hamstrings, and upper body safely and effectively. More importantly, I could feel my muscles working. I could sweat, feel fatigue, and I could reconnect with my body again—but in a way that respected the healing process.
Rebuilding Muscle Without Risk
One of the most overlooked challenges of injury recovery is muscle atrophy. You lose muscle fast when you’re not training—and even faster if your injury limits movement. But EMS changed that for me.
With EMS, I maintained—and in some areas, even built—muscle mass during my recovery. It wasn’t until I returned to traditional strength training that I noticed the full effect. I bounced back faster than expected. I wasn’t starting from zero. EMS had quietly laid the foundation beneath the surface, preparing me to lift, move, and perform again.
I was shocked. In the best way.
Why EMS Is Now a Permanent Part of My Routine
Recovery taught me something valuable: you don’t have to wait to feel strong again. And you don’t need to risk re-injury to train effectively. EMS gave me back my confidence and control during a time when I felt powerless. And now, it’s a non-negotiable part of my wellness and training routine.
At FitLab EMS, we bring that same power to our clients—whether you’re recovering from an injury, looking to maintain muscle as you age, or just trying to fit effective workouts into a busy schedule. EMS meets you where you are, and then it meets your goals.
