What Is EMS Training?
EMS stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. It uses low frequency electrical impulses delivered through a suit worn over a specialized undergarment to stimulate your muscles and force them to contract at a much deeper level than conventional training allows. Your brain naturally sends electrical signals to your muscles every time you move. EMS mimics and amplifies that process externally, activating up to 90% of your muscle fibers simultaneously rather than the 30 to 40% you typically engage during a regular workout. The result is a 20 minute session that delivers the kind of stimulus your body would otherwise need hours to replicate.
EMS training delivers a wide range of benefits in a fraction of the time of a conventional workout. Because the technology activates up to 90% of your muscle fibers simultaneously, you build strength, improve muscle tone, and increase metabolism far more efficiently than traditional exercise alone. Regular EMS sessions support fat loss and body composition changes, improve posture and core stability, and can reduce back and joint discomfort by strengthening the stabilizing muscles around problem areas. Many clients also notice improvements in overall energy, recovery, and athletic performance. The 20 minute format makes it one of the most time efficient training methods available, which is why it has become the go-to for people who want serious results without spending hours in a gym.
Yes. EMS technology has been used in physical therapy and rehabilitation settings for decades and is FDA cleared for fitness use. Every session at FitLab EMS is led by a certified EMS trainer who controls the intensity at all times and adjusts the suit settings individually for each muscle group. We start every new client conservatively and build from there. That said, EMS is not appropriate for everyone. If you have a pacemaker, implanted cardiac device, are pregnant, have been diagnosed with cancer, or have certain neurological conditions, EMS is not recommended. When in doubt, always check with your doctor before your first session.
Not at all. EMS adapts to your body and your current fitness level. I have trained complete beginners, postpartum clients, people recovering from injuries, and competitive athletes. The suit intensity is fully adjustable so the stimulus is always appropriate for where you are, not where someone else is.
The FitLab EMS Experience
When we meet I start by asking about your goals, any injuries or physical limitations, and how your body has been feeling. From there I walk you through how the equipment works, get you into the specialized undergarment I provide and fitted into the suit, and explain what you are going to feel before we begin. The undergarment is designed to retain moisture and stay wet throughout the session, which keeps the electrical current conducting properly between the suit and your body. The workout itself is 20 minutes of guided full body movement while the suit runs. I control the intensity throughout and coach you through every rep. After we finish I answer any questions and give you guidance on recovery so you get the most out of the session.
Plan for about 45 minutes total. The EMS workout itself is 20 minutes but we spend time before on your intake, equipment fitting, and walkthrough, and leave room at the end for questions.
It depends on your goals and your current routine. For the best results two sessions per week is the ideal frequency, giving your body enough stimulus to adapt quickly while allowing adequate recovery between sessions. Once per week is a great starting point and still delivers meaningful, consistent progress over time. I assess each client individually and make recommendations based on where you are and what you are working toward.
EMS does not hurt but it is an experience unlike anything you have felt in a conventional workout. You will feel an intense tingling and deep muscle contraction as the suit runs through its cycles. During your first session I start the intensity low and gradually increase it for each muscle group while checking in with you throughout. The goal is for you to feel challenged and deeply activated, not uncomfortable. Most clients describe it as intense in the best way possible, and by the end of the first session they have a clear sense of exactly how powerful the technology is.
Results & Expectations
Most clients feel a difference immediately after their first session. Visible changes in strength, muscle tone, and body composition typically begin showing up between sessions four and eight, which is less than two months of once weekly training. Results vary based on consistency, nutrition, and individual factors but EMS delivers faster adaptation than most training methods because of how deeply it recruits muscle tissue.
Most likely yes. The soreness after your first EMS session can be more intense than what you are used to from a conventional workout because your muscles are being recruited at a level they have not experienced before. It is normal and it is a sign the session was effective. Expect it to peak around 24 to 48 hours after your session and resolve fully within 72 hours. Staying hydrated and avoiding intense strength training for 48 hours post session will help significantly.
EMS is highly effective for body composition changes. The combination of deep muscle activation and the elevated metabolic demand of the session means your body continues burning calories well after the workout ends. Paired with solid nutrition habits EMS can absolutely support fat loss, but I am honest with my clients: no workout replaces what you do in the kitchen.
All injuries and physical limitations should be disclosed on your client intake form before your first session. As long as EMS is appropriate for you given your injury, I will design a workout that fully accommodates it. That means adjusting which muscle groups are activated, modifying the movements we use, and reducing intensity in the areas that need it. I also monitor and adjust throughout the session itself as needed, so if something does not feel right we address it immediately. Your safety and comfort are always the priority, and most clients with existing injuries find that EMS actually supports their recovery by strengthening the muscles around the affected area without putting stress on the injury itself.
Logistics & Booking
FitLab EMS is a concierge service, which means I come to you. Sessions take place at your home, apartment, or preferred location within the Charlotte area. I also host sessions at the FitLab Home Studio if you prefer to come to me.
The most important thing you can do before and after an EMS session is stay hydrated. EMS works by conducting electrical impulses through your muscle tissue, and hydration directly impacts how well your body conducts that current. When you are well hydrated your muscles respond more effectively, the session feels more consistent, and your recovery is faster. Aim to drink plenty of water in the hours leading up to your session and continue drinking water throughout the rest of the day afterward. Dehydration before a session can make the impulses feel more intense and uneven, and inadequate hydration after can prolong soreness. Beyond hydration, avoid heavy meals immediately before your session and refrain from intense strength training in the 48 hours following, so your muscles can recover fully and adapt from the stimulus.
Nothing special is required on your end. I provide the specialized undergarment designed to retain moisture and stay wet throughout the session, ensuring the electrical current conducts properly the entire time. All you need to bring is yourself. If you prefer to wear your own base layer under the suit, form fitting athletic wear works best. Nothing baggy, as the suit needs to sit properly to make full contact and work effectively.
EMS is not appropriate for people who are pregnant, have a pacemaker or implanted cardiac device, have been diagnosed with cancer, have active bacterial or viral infections, or certain heart conditions. If you have any health concerns or are unsure whether EMS is right for you please reach out before booking and I am happy to talk it through with you.
